Spider-Man PS4 Game Review

Spider-Man PS4 is the perfect example that it is possible for a studio to make a good superhero game when time and effort is put into it. This game is one of the most entertaining games I have played in years, from the story to the little easter eggs, everything is created almost to perfection.

The graphics in this game are incredible, from the detail on the buildings to the tiny ridges between different layers on the suits, everything looks visually stunning. Citizens are animated extremely well and can even be seen playing full sport matches at various points around the city. The lighting and reflections are incredible, especially at night, the city glows and key buildings like Avengers Tower or the Sanctum Sanctorum really stand out. Most buildings have 3D rooms rendered when you look through windows and actually vary somewhat from building to building. When looking around at the city from the tallest building you can really see the detail of each building and it is fantastic. One of the side activities is actually swinging around the city and taking pictures of landmarks.

The soundtrack in this game is sensational, the main theme plays when you're just swinging around the city and it's by far the best track in the game. The sinister six battle track is also great however, the one track I don't like is the generic battle theme that plays when you're fighting henchmen. The web swinging is another thing that the fans were worried about and I can gladly tell you that it is perfect. When Spider-Man is about to narrowly miss something, the game will automatically but smoothly move him away a bit in order to keep momentum going, and this is one of my favourite features of the game, I can't tell you how many times I almost hit a crane before being saved by the swinging mechanics. The swinging is even better than it was in Spider-Man 2 all those years ago.

The random crimes in the game are very basic when it comes to difficulty, but there are many different types of crime that are relatively fun, the best ones being robberies and Sable jetpack fights. The side activities are great, the backpack collectables and landmark photos are incredibly easy but offer some fun easter eggs, whereas the Taskmaster challenges are super fun, however I do dislike the research stations that are there as a way to earn research tokens to craft upgrades and new suits, as they were usually boring and tedious. The combat in the game is very similar to Arkham Knight where you can switch targets mid combat. However, unlike Arkham Knight, your attacks are a lot lighter and do less damage, your counter button has also been changed to dodge. this was a welcome change as it feels more how Spider-Man would fight rather than Batman.

Essentially the first 2 thirds of the game are dedicated to Martin Li and Mr negative's plan to bring down Norman Osborn, to expose him as the evil man he is. After you put Fisk away in the first mission, Li who's been working with Aunt May at the homeless shelter beforehand, sees an opportunity to find and secure the devil's breath, and Force Norman to release it, he also plans on killing anyone related to it. the Lions share of the first act are dedicated to investigating this plan, who Li really is, why he and the demons are terrorising the city and attacking Fisk's men, what they want, what the devil's breath, and how to stop them. after infiltrating Normans office you find out the Devil's breath is actually a disease, intended as a cure but a bio-weapon in practice. As the Demons become more and more of a problem, Norman Osborn hires a PMC called Sable International run by silver sablinova. They turn the city into a military state. Meanwhile city hall is attacked, killing Miles Morales' father, who is being honoured for saving Spider-Man and a train full of civilians. After endless chasing and detective work, Spider-Man finds Dr Michaels, who is the only man with a sample of devils breath. Sable plans on moving him to a safehouse but the convoy is attacked and the devils breath is stolen. MJ finds out where it is going to be released and heads there with Spider-Man in order to stop Li. After a fight on a moving train you manage to take him down.

As you've been battling the demons, Peter and Dr Octavius have been developing prosthetics. You were originally successful until Norman Osborn shuts your lab down. Peter tells Octavius that he is willing to stay and continue his research despite funding being lost. As Otto works on the prosthetics, it's clear that something is wrong. As it turns out Otto was diagnosed with ALS, Peter warns Otto that the prosthetics chip is faulty and causing personality changes in the user, but Otto doesn't listen. After a few days pass, the devils breath is once again stolen, and both Rykers Island and The Raft are compromised, so you and Yuri head in to try and stop the riots but all of your worst enemies have been set free. You head up to the roof and put up a fight against the sinister six but are ultimately defeated. With Spider-Man down, Otto is able to continue with Li's plan and releases the devils breath. After a mad scramble to save your loved ones from riots, you find Otto's lair in times square, where you discover that each member of the sinister six is being helped by Otto in return for their help with his plan. You take down Electro and Vulture, and soon after Rhino and Scorpion. Spider-Man locates the cure for devils breath and heads there with Silver Sable after convincing her that teaming up is the only way to bring down Li, you manage to take down Li but Otto escapes with the cure. Peter makes a new suit and takes down Otto, allowing him to take the cure. However, there is only one dose, so Peter can either synthesise it to create more, or cure Aunt May then and there, but he chooses to do the former and Aunt May sadly passes away. Six months later Peter is back with MJ, Miles reveals his powers to Peter and Harry Osborn is revealed to be at the lab, carrying the Venom symbiote.

To sum up, Spider-Man PS4 is the best Spider-Man game ever made and the best superhero game ever made. The story is well paced, the combat is as good as the Arkham games and the bosses are all different and interesting in their own ways. I recommend this game more than I've ever recommend anything. 9/10
